The German Lebenslauf is the opposite of the US resume in almost every cultural rule: a professional photo is still expected, date and place of birth are commonly included, and the document is traditionally signed and dated by hand at the bottom. The format is tabular — clean two-column rows of dates and facts — and the tone is strictly factual. German recruiters read language sections seriously, so proficiency must be stated in CEFR levels (A1–C2), not "fluent". Sending an American-style resume for a role in Munich reads as not understanding the market.

The rules Germany recruiters expect
- Called a Lebenslauf; tabular format is traditional, modern layouts are accepted
- A professional photo is commonly included (top right)
- Date of birth and place of birth are widely included (optional post-GDPR but still the norm)
- Marital status and nationality are sometimes included
- Signed and dated at the bottom — signature, date, place
- Reverse chronological, 1–2 pages
- Standard sections: Persönliche Daten, Berufserfahrung, Ausbildung, Kenntnisse, Sprachen, Hobbys
- Language skills stated with CEFR levels (A1–C2)
Mistakes that get Germany applications rejected
No photo or a casual photo
German employers expect a professional headshot. A selfie — or nothing — both cost credibility.
Forgetting the signature line
An unsigned Lebenslauf is traditionally considered incomplete, especially at conservative employers.
"Fluent English" instead of CEFR
German HR reads C1 and B2, not adjectives. Unrated languages get ignored.
US-style achievement prose
The Lebenslauf is a factual table, not a sales pitch. Save persuasion for the Anschreiben (cover letter).
