Does anyone still read cover letters?

Some do and some do not, and you cannot tell which from the outside. The useful way to think about it: a cover letter almost never wins you a job on its own, but a good one regularly rescues an application the CV alone would have lost — a career change, a gap, a move to a new country, a background that is relevant in a way the job titles do not show. Those are exactly the situations where the CV cannot speak for itself.

If your CV is a straightforward match for the advert, the letter matters little. If something about your application needs explaining, it matters a great deal.

What a good one contains

Three short paragraphs. Under 300 words. It is read in about twenty seconds.

1. Why this role, specifically. One sentence proving you read the advert and know what the company does. Not flattery — a concrete reference to the work.
2. The strongest evidence you can do it. One example, with a result. Choose the single most relevant thing you have done rather than summarising your CV, which they already have.
3. Address the obvious question. If there is a gap, a change of field, or a need for visa sponsorship, name it here in one plain sentence. Left unsaid it becomes the thing they wonder about; said plainly it becomes a fact they have already processed.

What to leave out

• “I am writing to apply for the position of…” They know. It is the first line of most letters and it wastes the only sentence guaranteed to be read.
• A retelling of your CV. It is attached.
• “Passionate”, “dynamic”, “team player”. Unfalsifiable, so they carry no information.
• “To Whom It May Concern”. Find a name where you can. Where you cannot, “Dear Hiring Team” is fine and does not sound like 1994.
• Anything about what the job will do for you. The letter is about what you bring; the interview is where your side gets discussed.

Applying for a job abroad

An international application carries a question a domestic one does not: can this employer actually hire you? Say where you are, say what you need, and say it in one sentence — for example, that you would require work authorisation and are available to relocate. Employers dislike discovering this late far more than they dislike the fact itself, and burying it is the most common way a promising application dies at final stage.
